PerformYard's MCP Server Setup

Introduction

With a PerformYard Premium license, administrators can let employees work with PerformYard from the AI tools they already use, such as Claude, ChatGPT, and Microsoft Copilot. This works through PerformYard's MCP (Model Context Protocol) server, an open standard that lets an AI assistant connect to outside tools and data. Once connected, a user can ask a question in plain English and the assistant pulls the answer from PerformYard, or makes an update in PerformYard on their behalf.

Administrators control whether the MCP server is available to their organization with a single setting. You'll find it under Company Settings → AI → MCP.

Disclaimer: This feature uses artificial intelligence to generate its content. While it aims to provide accurate answers, AI assistants may not always capture the full nuance or context behind your data. Please review responses and any changes the assistant makes before relying on them for decisions.

Before You Begin

  • Each user connects their own AI tool. Turning on the setting doesn't connect anyone automatically. See Connecting PerformYard to Claude, ChatGPT, and Microsoft Copilot for the steps.

Enable MCP Server

Administrators can turn the MCP Server on or off for their organization using a single toggle. Once the setting is on, members of your organization can add PerformYard as a connector in their AI tool and sign in with their PerformYard account. Disabling this setting removes the ability for members of your organization to access PerformYard's MCP server. Every existing connection in your company ends immediately, in every AI tool.

What Your Users Will See

When a user adds the PerformYard connector and signs in, PerformYard shows an approval screen that names the AI tool asking for access and the PerformYard account being used. The user chooses what the assistant is allowed to do:

  • View their profile, the employee directory, and the goals, meetings, feedback, reviews and reports they can already see in PerformYard. This is always included.
  • Change data on their behalf, such as creating and updating goals, wherever PerformYard already lets them. This is optional.

If a user doesn't allow changes, the assistant never sees the tools that make changes. To change their choice later, the user reconnects the connector.

Security and Permissions

  • Your permissions apply on every request. Each request is checked against the user's current PerformYard role. If a user can't see a goal, review or report in PerformYard, neither can the assistant.
  • Connecting an AI tool doesn't widen access. The assistant only sees and changes what the signed-in user can.
  • Confidential content stays protected. Private feedback notes stay with their author, anonymous reviewers stay anonymous, and in-progress reviews, meeting notes and transcripts are never returned.
  • You can end access at any time. Turning off the MCP setting ends every connection in your company immediately.
