Goal Coaching Setup

Introduction

With a PerformYard Talent Development license, administrators can customize Goal Coaching to fit their organization's needs. PerformYard's Goal Quality Coach helps employees write stronger, more effective goals by providing AI-generated improvement suggestions as goals are being created. Rather than leaving employees to guess whether their goal is well-written, Goal Quality Coach evaluates it against a framework and offers targeted feedback in the moment. Administrators control whether this feature is available to their organization and can select the specific goal-writing framework used to guide that feedback, ensuring suggestions align with the standards and language their company already uses. You'll find this under Company Settings → Coaching → Goals.

Enable Goal Quality Coach

Administrators can turn Goal Quality Coach on or off for their organization using a single toggle. When enabled, members of the organization receive improvement suggestions from PerformYard as they create their goals. Disabling this setting will remove PerformYard's ability to improve user-created goals, meaning employees will no longer receive AI-generated feedback during goal creation until the feature is re-enabled.

Goal Framework

The Goal Framework setting determines which set of criteria PerformYard uses to evaluate and coach goals, allowing admins to align feedback with the goal-writing approach their organization already follows. Three options are available:

  • General Guidance blends several popular goal-writing frameworks and evaluates goals across six dimensions: clarity, focus, measurability, ownership, timeframe fit, and relevance to role. This option works well for organizations that want broad, well-rounded feedback without committing to a single named framework.
  • SMART aligns feedback to the widely recognized SMART framework, evaluating whether a goal is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This is a strong choice for organizations already using SMART goals as their standard.
  • Custom surfaces a text area where admins can define their organization's own goal-writing framework in their own words, describing internal principles, what a good goal looks like at their company, or priorities goals should connect to. The more context provided, the more relevant and tailored the resulting coaching will be.

Whichever framework is selected, it becomes the standard PerformYard uses when generating feedback, ensuring the coaching employees receive reflects the way their organization actually thinks about goals. For PerformYard Premium license holders, the selected goal framework also informs Ask PerformYard's ability to suggest and create goals for your organization, making those suggestions smarter and more closely tailored to how your company approaches goal-writing.
